Mohawk Community Builders Poster - Process

PosterStep1

This is the first step, I went through a rough draft of what I wanted to do. I started with the hands around the top of the poster, getting an idea of each hand holding a piece to the puzzle, literally building the house out of pieces.

PosterStep2

I then made a more detailed and clean drawing of the hands, I didn't draw the house at this stage because I was working in photoshop and couldn't make straight lines well. I gave all the hands the proper amount of detail, like the creases in each palm.

PosterStep3

I then added both the color and the shading to the hands, making each hand a different color, showing people of each race helping out. I did a fair bit of shadowing, trying not to do too much because I wanted it to be a bright image and have the hands stand out against the background.

PosterStep4

This is where I brought in both the house and the puzzle pieces. I drew the house in Illustrator and brought it in as a placed file, then messed around with it a bit. I used the puzzle piece pattern to figure out which pieces I wanted to cut out and the pieces I wanted to put in each hand.

PosterStep5

Here I planned out where each piece would sit in each hand and which pieces were being taken out.

PosterStep6

I fast forwarded a bit here and put all the colour in and the cut out of each piece. I decided to make the background a gradient to incorporate Mohawk into it. I added a small inner shadow to the pieces that were cut out, trying to give it a more 3d feel and a certain amount of depth to the image. I also added a few houses beside the middle house to make it more of a community feel, as if the buildings were already built, and the middle one was next.

Poster Final

This is the final image, I placed the logo into the bottom left and gave a small quote that I felt belonged in the image.

I hope you all like this, and I had quite a bit of fun (and time) put into this design.

Thank you.
Mike.

Mohawk Community Builders Logo

Mohawk Community Builders Logo

So this is the logo that I designed for the project. I changed it quite a bit from my original design, however I find I like this one a lot better than the original. I structured the Mohawk "m" logo to look like buildings, and gave them a cool perspective, coloring them of course in the Mohawk colors. I added the colored top to the hard hat to incorporate it more with the Mohawk logo, uniting them both in the design. The text I forget the name of the font I chose but I feel it gives off a good "construction" like feel and works with the design.

Duet

This is the image I made for the word "Duet" For the record I do not listen to Lady Gaga, not really into her kind of music but the fact that Eric Cartman from South Park did a full cover of it, I could not resist. I can't stop listening to that song and had the idea for this image as my Illustration Friday submission clear when I saw the word. I again did simple colors, I gave some shading to Lady Gaga but non to Eric because there is no real shading in South Park. I made Gaga in sort of my own rendition of what she would wear, giving her sort of an ice queen kind of feel.

The background I actually spent a little time on, doing a couple of cool photoshop filter techniques to get the streaming colours right. It was fun to learn these kinds of things.

New Toy

This is what I envision when I think of getting a new toy haha. I love giant robots, Gundam's in specific and I wanted to showcase both it and me standing on it's shoulder. I did simple colors with a lot of detaiil going into the pen values, using hatching and some cross hatching to get certain parts darker. Like the hair, I did a lot of hatching to make that as dark s it is.

Sweater

So this is my illsutration for the word "Sweater". I wanted to do Freddy Kruger from Nightmare on Elm Street right from the beginning when the word popped up. He is always wearing that sweater in the movies is one of the things he is most recognized for, besides the knife hands and the nightmare killings of course. I grew up watching these movies a along with Jason Vorhees, he is one of my favorite movie characters. I did this image in a traditional paint style, placing more detail on the face. I added some dark shadowing to immerse himself into the background, as he is a horror character, black is the best background to put him against. I made the word sweater to resemble blood, thinking it would tie in nicely with the image. Also giving a little bit of a joke about the sweater.

Stir (Stirring Up Trouble)

Stiring up trouble again...

So this is an older painting I made when I was younger. I was having a hard time trying to think of something for this word and I gave up. I am sorry I couldn't come up with something original but I knew how this would tie into the word so I went with it. It acts on the "stirring up trouble" feel in which the boy we see here is very mean and kicks a lizard for no reason. As we see in the next few panels that action will soon have consequences and the lizard comes back but alas he is not alone. The boy looks up and we see him staring face to face with Godzilla, the King of Monsters. (even though this is the 1998 American Version Godzilla) and he is in for it now.

I did fix up the words because I don't have a great camera and it blurred a bit when I took the photos so I went into photoshop and made the words more pronounced. I hope you like it anyways.

IF Word "Layer"

For the word "layer" i wanted to combine it with the step by step process we are doing in school right now. I thought it ties into the theme of the picture as i decided to focus on the "layers" of things that we never actually see. Meaning what we perceive as normal everyday life could hold much secrets to it that we would have never guessed. And so that is when I decided to start out with this brief sketch.

MechaCowStep1

This is the first step in which i just went fast and drew out a sketch of what I wanted to do. As you can tell it is a cow that has had it's left side peeled back to show the skeleton underneath, reveals it's "layers" but what we see is not what we would imagine. Instead we see a mechanized side that we never thought would be there. This idea came from how much I love robots.

MechaCowStep2

This is the second step in which I refined the lines and added a bit more detail to the picture, trying to give greater contrast between the normal cow side and it's mechanized counterpart.

MechaCowStep3

And this where I added all the actual color and detail to the image. I kind of forgot to save the basic color outlook before I put the detail in and was too far ahead to go back and save the step. But here we see is the cow, finished in all it's detail, I tried my best to illustrate the robotic parts as best as I could, giving them a shine and a shadow. The same as the cow, I did a lot of different browns to give its hide a real depth to it.

MechaCowFinal

This is the final image with the background added in, again playing to the two sides, where I made the normal cow side have a blue sky with clouds, acting all normal and grazing and such. And with the mecha side I made the red lines to represent a mechanical feel, kinda like a digital stream of information passing through the cow.

Devastator Graffiti

DevastatorWallDone

So this is my graffiti that I made for class. I know it doesn't display a clear message other than that if you see a giant 50 foot robot breaking through a wall...run.

The robot I drew on the wall is called "Devastator" as depicted by name also being graiffiti'd below the image. He is a a combination of 6 small robots called "constructicons" which are all from the cartoon series Transformers. I started by drawing a basic outline of him, and then worked out the colors to use by using the actual transformer a a reference. I then did some shading and completed him before I worked on the background wall he would be busting out of. I tried to stick to the details of the wall that he's on to get the best realistic looking "break through" I could get.

Warning!

Warning!

SO this is my image for this weeks word "Warning"

I knew right off the bat when I learned of this weeks word that I wanted to do something with this guy. His name is Deviljho and anyone who has played the newest Monster Hunter games (Monster Hunter Tri and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd) will instantly get this. The warning sign picture at the bottom was taken from the actual warning sign you get when you are about to face this monster.

I love playing Monster Hunter and have always wanted to do something with that game in mind and finally I am able to. Warning! This game is addicting!

Also I credit Capcom and Monster Hunter both for the "Warning" text. This text was taken from a screenshot of the game and I did not create it myself, I merely used it as an additional image to complete my image.

McFired!

MCFired

So this is the McFired article that we illustrated for our Creative Illustration class. I took my time on it and did as much as I could without trying to make it too complicated. My interpretation of the article is more so about fighting against those trying to control you, rather than the McNifishent burger that Kyle created. So I decided to make them all puppets under the direct control of a fat, corporate Ronald McDonald and then have Kyle cutting his own strings. I like how it all turned out in the end, and I added a small bit of texture to kinda give it that construction paper like feel, make it less obvious it was done on the computer.

Laptop Skin

This is a laptop Skin that I drew for Photoshop class. It took me about 10-15 hours to complete and I am glad how it turned out. I love dragon ball z and I thought that this would be the best design for my laptop. Instead of using photos and effects though I drew mine from scratch. I have the original pencil drawing I will upload later, but I hope everyone who sees this enjoys it as much as I do.

Surrender

SURRENDER TO DEAD SPACE...

To understand this artwork, I will explain a little bit about Dead Space itself. Dead Space is a horror themed 3rd person shooter which revolves around the discovery of an alien artifact known as the "Marker" A new religion called "unitology" believes that the marker is the origin of human kind, and thus excavate it and study it. However soon after people start to have delusions and violent psychotic outbursts, eventually turned into monsters and killing everyone in their path.

Surrender

I have been playing a lot of the dead space series recently and had just finished Dead Space Extraction last night when this idea came to mind. The word for Illustration Friday this week was "Surrender" and instantly I knew that this game would be a perfect subject to create my artwork from. I wanted to try incorporating the text into the image, having the alien text reading "surrender" surrounding the people holding his head.

Evil Knight

This drawing is something that I made back in the good old days of highschool, it was at the time I was creating a promotional video for the chess club. I designed it to be a dark knight, trying to incorporate both modern and classical designs. I scanned it into photoshop and left the lines the way they were, only turning it black and giving him a red eye to emphasize his evilness.
